Ways To Fight Winter Depression

If you live a place where the winters are cold and dark, chances are that you experience some form of depression during the dead of winter. For some people, this is the result of a clinical condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder, in which the lack of light during the winter months causes symptoms of depression that are not present during the rest of the year

For people who have S. A. D., the symptoms are far more severe. But most of experience some kind of mood change during the winter. We tend to feel lazier, and want to sleep more. Because it is cold outside, we stay in the house most of the time. We crave comfort foods, which tend to be starchier and higher in fat than the things we eat during other times of year.

When all these factors combine, it is not surprising that we experience a bit of depression. Being cooped up inside make us feel trapped and isolated. It is essential to find ways to fight these feelings. Here are a few ideas for activities that can help.

Learn a New Hobby

Most people have a hobby or two that they've been planning to take up but have not yet gotten around to. Maybe there is an Alvarez acoustic guitar sitting in the corner of your room collecting dust. You bought it months ago, but haven't taken the time to learn to play. Winter is a great opportunity for learning an instrument. Maybe you've always wanted to learn to knit. Winter is a wonderful time to knit scarves and send them to your friends and family.

Get Out Of the House

Simply leaving your house or apartment can completely change your mood. You could go see a movie, go out to dinner or brunch with a friend, or go shopping. You could make a day of searching for the perfect pair of leather brown boots, or just sit with someone for a few hours in a coffee shop. The simple act of leaving the house and changing your scenery can make things seem better and more promising.

Start Exercising

There is nothing like exercise as an antidote for depression. The chemicals that your body releases during exercise lift your mood all on their own. Even if it is too cold to go out for a walk or jog, you can find many ways to work out. Find a video that has an aerobic or muscle workout routine you can do at home. Join a gym if you have the money to do it. There are lots of ways to get exercise.

If you make a little bit of an attempt, the winter blahs don't have to get the best of you. Try any of these activities, and before you know it, winter will be over and spring will be here!

    Isaiah 32:17 The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. Sowing and reaping – it’s a biblical principle that we see at work throughout the Word and throughout creation. We sow a seed and reap a harvest, bear fruit. This verse means, then, that if we sow righteousness, we will reap peace. Who among us wouldn’t like more peace – in our lives, in our world? Righteousness can be simply defined as “right-living,” referring to relationship between human and God as well as between human and human. Hundreds of scriptures describe this right living or righteousness to us, and what we see in this passage is that if we employ “right-living,” the fruit that will be produced is peace. The verse goes on to say that the effect of righteousness is quietness and confidence forever. So when we engage in right living, not only will we reap a harvest of peace, but the impact, in turn, on our lives will be quietness and confidence –forever. What a comfort! Aren’t we hungry for it? I don’t believe the Lord is referring here to a lack of noise or busy-ness in daily life. I believe He is inviting us to a deep, inner peace and quietness of spirit, an anchor that goes deep and remains firm despite the thrashing and storms of life around us. Please notice it’s not temporary…right living breeds benefits that last forever! What must we do? Be intentional about living rightly in relationship to God and in relationship to one another.
